Izaak's boutique-style bedroom on a budget
My eldest son, Luke has just fled the nest.
It's a very weird feeling which I think most people will get. He's moved into a lovely open plan new build. His living room is navy blue with accents of mustard.
He has also got a lovely little Russian Blue cat called Teddy, they both appear to be very settled.
My youngest son, Izaak is still at home and always wanted his brother's bedroom as it is a lot bigger than his. Initially the move was to take place last July but with Covid there was a massive hold up with the construction industry.
Virtually the day Luke moved out, the paint and brushes came out to start decorating Izaak's new bedroom. Funnily enough Izaak wanted navy blue as well, the same as Luke, but with more of a boutique element.
We painted over the cream walls with an undercoat and topped this off with two coats of of Dulux Sapphire Salute in a matt finish. Skirting boards, architraves and ceiling were painted white.
I sourced a lovely French style bench from Vintage Barn in Widnes for £80, this was a bargain as it's good solid construction and well worth the time, effort and minimal cost of the renovation.
Originally the wood was gold which I actually liked, but Izaak wanted it spraying white. The fabric was a faded gold velvet and quite badly marked. I took a chance and painted it with the emulsion that I used to paint the walls. I was a bit dubious about doing this as I was concerned that it may crack, particularly if somebody sat on it. Anyway it's worked out fine and can be sat on even though it is as hard as the hobs from hell!!
We placed a floor standing mirror behind the bench which was actually one of the doors off the wardrobes.
This gave the corner of the room a focal point of interest.
A small side table was placed next to the bench with a vase of flowers placed on it.
WARDROBES
These were very old carcasses from the PAX range, IKEA. They belonged to Luke who decided not to take with him as he wanted everything new.
By leaving the mirrored doors on the wardrobes it meant we wouldn't be able to get any side tables in next to the bed. We removed the doors and gave the carcasses a good old scrub.
We bought matching black hangers and Izaak colour coded all his clothes in an orderly manner. This really works if everything is kept neat and tidy and gives it a modern edge.
Next to the wardrobes is a chest of drawers again from the PAX range. The frame on the wall above the chest used to have a mirror in it but unfortunately this got smashed, but I like the effect of just the frame.
In the alcove next to the door is a bookshelf from the same range which Izaak has styled using unusual objects and customised them by painting them different colours to his taste.
Again the furniture was a remnant from his brother and needed a damned good clean!
AROUND THE BED
Bedside tables were bought new from the same range.
We bought two bedside lamps from Facebook Market Place for a mere £20. They are very heavy and superb quality with glass droplets.
Above the bed hang two stylish black and white prints to add to the boutique feel.
We used a high thread count hotel bedding in white which is so cool and luxurious and dressed the bed with cushions and a lovely white sham which my Mum knitted to give a textured look.
WINDOW TREATMENT
These curtains used to be in our living room about 15 years ago. I had them made and they cost the earth. I was quite loath to get rid of them for that reason.
I decided to take the chance and wash them.
To my horror the fabric had worked its way out of the eyelets, so I ended up with very clean curtains that had come undone.
I couldn't bear to get rid of them so I set to with a needle and thread and mend them, it took ages.
The finished affect against the navy gives a lovely contrast adding textured fabric with the white lifting the navy.
BAY WINDOW
Having the luxury of living in a lovely big old house we are blessed with substantial bay windows. Sitting in the bay is a mirrored console table which used to sit in our hall many moons ago but is now used as a dressing table.
Sitting on top is a three way mirror from B and M. Izaak has dressed it in his stylish minimal fashion.
The little stool underneath was a vintage find which I painted white and reupholstered it in grey chenille.
FLOORING
We added a new laminate floor as the previous one had split and lifted due to drinks being spilled on it.
A new rug from B and M at £40 was placed at an angle in front of the bench to break up the floor and give a more luxurious look.
LIGHTING
We bought a pendant light from Facebook Marketplace for around £20.
Unfortunately when we removed the original light there was an area missing in the textured paper that had to be filled. I bought a Victorian copy ceiling rose in polystyrene to cover this.
I was surprised to see how good it actually looks as you would think it was plaster and easy to stick up with special adhesive.
The overall desired effect of the room has been achieved mostly by my son, Izaak.
It has been created on a budget and gives the feel of an oasis of calm, tranquillity and style.
Well done Izaak!
